What is Coaching?
A Health Coach is a dedicated wellness expert who can help you achieve your goals, no matter how big or small. They offer unique knowledge and insights that can support you in ways you might not achieve alone, addressing gaps in your hauora/overall health, helping you stick to your intentions, and suggesting solutions (alongside moral support) when obstacles arise.
With a coach, you can work through complex feelings and behaviours that might be holding you back from reaching your goals or simply get tips for healthy meals or stress reduction. You can talk to a Health Coach about anything on your mind—they’ll guide you on how they can help or suggest someone else who might be a better fit.
While health coaching is, at its core, about compassion and empathy, coaching itself is grounded in science and evidence-based interventions.
“... people have innate wisdom, strength and creativity that, when skilfully recruited, will guide them to health more efficiently than will external advice”
(Smith et al 2013, p. 69)
Who is Coaching for?
Coaching is for anyone who’s ready to move from where they are to where they want to be. Whether you're aiming to switch careers, strengthen relationships, sharpen communication, or find more balance and happiness, coaching provides personalised support to help you achieve your goals.
How coaching works?
-
Health coaches work with coachee’s to establish realistic and achievable value-based health goals, which are tailored to the individual's specific needs and circumstances.
-
Coaches use motivational interviewing techniques to help individuals explore their intrinsic motivations for change and overcome ambivalence.
-
Health coaches provide members with credible information and resources to support their behaviour change efforts, empowering them to make informed decisions based on the latest evidence.
-
Regular sessions with a health coach help coachee’s stay accountable for their progress and provide ongoing encouragement and feedback. Accountability has been shown on numerous occasions to increase adherence to programmes as long as it is rooted in the coachee’s intrinsic motivation.
The Benefits of Health Coaching
Health coaching is designed to help you make meaningful changes to your health and wellbeing. Our accredited health coaches are trained to support you with a wide range of health challenges, offering a personalised approach to help you achieve your goals.
Personalised Support
Your health journey is unique, and our coaches understand that. Health coaching focuses on your individual needs, challenges, and goals, creating a plan that’s just for you. This personalised approach is at the core of what we do, ensuring you receive the support that truly fits your situation.
Lasting Change
Our goal is to help you make positive changes that stick. By focusing on what truly motivates you, setting meaningful goals, and building your confidence in your ability to succeed, health coaching helps you maintain those changes over the long term. You’ll gain the tools, knowledge, and support needed to take charge of your health for the long haul.
Better Health Outcomes
Health coaching has been proven to improve various health outcomes, such as quitting smoking, lowering blood pressure, and managing diabetes more effectively. Our coaches work with you to make these kinds of positive changes that can lead to better overall health.
High Satisfaction
Many people who engage in health coaching report feeling highly satisfied with the experience. The supportive and understanding relationship you’ll build with your coach can make a real difference, helping you stay committed to your health goals and see the positive outcomes you’re aiming for.
The difference between health coaching & therapy
Both offer valuable support, but health coaches and counsellors focus on different aspects of your wellbeing. While therapy helps you work through past issues and emotional challenges, health coaching is about setting goals and making positive changes for the future.
In short, Health Coaches focus on, ‘What does happy and healthy look like to you, and how can we get there?’ while a therapist may help you understand the past experiences that led you to where you are now.
What if a coach isn’t the right level of support?
The great thing about working with a health coach is they are professionally trained to identify what support you might need and what the most appropriate level of support might be. If a coach suspects you would be better working with a counsellor or therapist, they will help direct you to the level of support you need for your unique situation.
With Kiasma, we make it easy to find other levels of support you might need and make it simple to access all levels of support offered by your employer or access to free public health services should you need.
